Lightner of New York City, one of
great players of the world and a
leading figure in bridge from the
earliest days of contract. Life
Master # 7, member ACBL Hall of
Fame. Born in Grosse Pointe MI,
later a resident of Chicago and
New York City. Graduate of Yale
and of Harvard Law School. He had
a seat on the New York Stock
Exchange. Contributor to
development of Culbertson System
and was the inventor of the
Lightner Double of slam
contracts. His writings include
High Lights of the Culbertson
System, Famous Hands of the
Culbertson-Lenz Match (co-author)
and he made frequent
contributions to The Bridge
World. Partnered Ely Culbertson
during a part of the
Culbertson-Lenz Match and was a
member of the Culbertson team
that won victories over British
teams in 1930, 33, 34. Won
Bermuda Bowl 1953.Won Spingold
1937, 39, 45; Chicago 1947,
Vanderbilt 1930, Life Master
Pairs 1932, 35; Open Pairs 1928.
Placed 2nd Spingold 1941, Chicago
